I presented evidence focused on the role of asset-level provenance mechanisms - specifically open standards such as C2PA, ODRL, etc. — in carrying granular indicators of AI training preferences and associated licensing information. The testimony outlined how provenance metadata can support transparency, rights signalling, and scalable licensing frameworks for creative content in generative AI pipelines.  This is a 10 minute abridged and subtitled video focusing on some of the contributions made to the discussion - the full version is one hour long and available on the parliament event website.",

The talk gives practical detail on the use of open standards for media provenance as a basis for creating durable markers for opting in and out of AI use, and to build upon these to create provenance backed content licensing - in effect a Creative Copyright Exchange. I reference our recent Time to ACCCT and Content ARCs works and how these describe the technical steps necessary, and the open challenges that remain.",

    "abstract": "Provenance facts, such as who made an image and how, can provide valuable context for users to make trust decisions – particularly in the age of Generative AI.   In this talk I will contrast three provenance technologies: metadata, fingerprinting and watermarking, and discuss how they may be combined to provide robust trust signals to support stories told by real and Generative AI images.  I will outline Content Credentials, an emerging standard for provenance metadata and how its rapid adoption promises to play an important role in fighting fake news and the spread of misinformation.  Beyond uses in contente authenticity, I will describe how provenance can also underpin new models for value creation in the age of Generative AI. In doing so I address risks arising with generative AI such as ensuring training consent, and the proper attribution of credit to creatives who contribute their work to train generative models",

    "abstract": "Invited academic talk on the ARCHANGEL project at the Future of Distributed Ledger Technology workshop organised by the Issac Newton Institute, GCHQ, and Digital Catapult.  I describe the ARCHANGEL project and how we use video fingerprinting and blockchain to assure the integrity and provenance of videos inside digital public archives, including those of the UK, US, Norway, Australia and Estonia in a 2 month trial.  Towards the end of the talk, I demonstrate a journalism use case of the idea - appling the same visual fingeprrinting and blockchain to trace the provenance of news articles.  I discuss how this is complementary to deep fake detection.  The concept of media provenance for fighting fake news proposed here influenced the subsequently formed Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) at Adobe which ultimately led to the C2PA standard being founded.",
